In carrying out its international disaster relief work, Tzu Chi adheres to five principles: directness, priority, respect, timeliness and practicality. These five principles are designed to achieve a high degree of efficiency for disaster relief activities.
There is only one purpose for the Tzu Chi disaster relief program: to help disaster victims recover peacefully and quickly. Therefore, the Tzu Chi disaster relief program often includes mid term and long term efforts after immediate disaster relief.
Tzu Chi New Zealand have poured in efforts to raise funds and contribute to the Kaikoura earthquake. The initial team of volunteers flew in on helicopter with Civil Defence to Kaikoura and Mt Lyford to meet with local affected residents and carried out cash card relief distribution. A total of 250 families have benefited from the donation with cash cards valuing up to $125,000.
