Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental,
charitable organization founded in Hualien, Taiwan by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in 1966. Tzu,
meaning “compassion” and Chi, “relief”, has been actively engaged in the Four Missions of
Charity, Medicine, Education and Humanitarism for more than half a century. The missions have
subsequently extended to include International Relief, Bone Marrow Donation, Environmental
Protection and Community Volunteerism. Together, they are known as “Tzu Chi’s Eight Footprints”.
Tzu Chi’s operations are funded by donations from the public and its volunteers. Donations are
carefully monitored and their uses clearly stated, earning the confidence and support of the public.
To this day, nearly all services are provided by Tzu Chi volunteers, with an attitude of love and
gratitude towards all sentient beings.
