“Kindness, compassion, joy and selfless–giving” are the principles of Tzu Chi’s Education mission. They portray Master Cheng Yen’s belief that education of life and morals are of uttermost importance to cultivate wholesome beings.
The goal of “Education of virtue, education of life and education of a person as a whole” can be seen throughout Tzu Chi’s Mission of Education. Teachers, parents and volunteers all come together to educate children to respect life and have faith in the human nature of kindness and compassion.

Jing Si Chinese Class |
Continuing Education Program |
Children are the pillars of tomorrow’s society, and with the right moral values and virtues they will form a better future for humanity. Jing Si Chinese Class in New Zealand was established in 1999 to teach the Chinese language and traditional values through Jing Si aphorisms, which are Master Cheng Yen’s words of wisdom. Children from Jing Si Chinese Class are expected to tidy their own classrooms and take turns in servicing fellow students during morning tea time to learn to shoulder responsibilities and experience the joy of helping others. |
With “purifying minds” as its educational vision, in 1988 Tzu Chi NZ established a place in the community for lifelong learning and promotion of humanitarianism values. Besides imparting new knowledge, the ultimate goal of the programme is to refine the personality of participants so that they are able to build a positive character.

East Tamaki School Special Visits
Student volunteers from Tzu Chi Collegiate Association first began weekly visits to East Tamaki Primary School to assist ESOL children with their reading.
Most volunteers would travel all the way from the University of Auckland to East Tamaki Primary School via public transport. The traveling meant nothing to the volunteers when they understand the importance of raising children’s literacy skills and how much progress they would make with a little extra help. Over the years, the small group of volunteers evolved and discussions came about to design activities for the children and share our aligned values at the school. On July 1st 2008, the first cultural and values exchange between Tzu Chi Collegiate Association volunteer and East Tamaki Primary School took place. For the next four years, the special visit covered values such as respect, honesty, friendship, integrity and environmental protection. |
